Why is LCD widely used?

Generally speaking, reducing costs has become an important principle for businesses to survive. Looking at the development process of TFT LCD, it is not difficult to find that increasing the size of glass substrates, reducing the number of masks, improving the production capacity and product yield of the base, and purchasing raw materials nearby are the continuous efforts of many TFT LCD production enterprises. Glass substrate is an important raw material for the production of TFT-LCD, and its cost accounts for approximately 15% to 18% of the total cost of TFT-LCD, starting from the first generation line (300mm × The development of the 10th generation line (2850mm) from 400mm to today × 3050mm), has only experienced a short period of twenty years.

However, due to the extremely high requirements for chemical composition, performance, and production process conditions of TFT-LCD glass substrates, the global production technology and market of TFT-LCD glass substrates have long been monopolized by a few companies such as Corning in the United States, Asahi and Electric Nitrate in Japan. Under the strong promotion of market development, mainland China began actively participating in the research and production of TFT-LCD glass substrates in 2007. Currently, multiple fifth generation and above TFT-LCD glass substrate production lines have been built in China, and two 8.5 generation high generation LCD glass substrate production lines are planned to be launched in the second half of 2011. This provides an important guarantee for the localization of upstream raw materials and significant reduction of manufacturing costs for TFT LCD production enterprises in mainland China.

The most core part of TFT production technology is the photolithography process, which is not only an important link in determining product quality, but also a key part that affects product costs. In the photolithography process, the mask is the most concerned one, and its quality largely determines the quality of TFT-LCD. The reduction of its usage can effectively reduce equipment investment and shorten production cycles.

With the changes in the structure of TFT and the improvement of production processes, the number of masks used in its manufacturing process is also correspondingly decreasing. From this, it can be seen that the TFT production process has developed from the early 8-mask or 7-mask lithography process to the commonly used 5-mask or 4-mask lithography process, greatly reducing the TFT-LCD production cycle and production costs.

At present, the 4-mask lithography process has become the mainstream in the industry.
